Zika Virus Disease

As of early 2016, a widespread outbreak of Zika was ongoing, primarily in the Americas. The outbreak began in April 2015 in Brazil, and has spread to other countries in South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. In January 2016.
The Zika virus is spread mainly by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is commonly found throughout tropical and subtropical areas. It can also be spread by the Aedes albopictus („Asian tiger“) mosquito, which is distributed in North America and Europe. Sexual transmission of the Zika virus is also possible.
This infographic holds a map that shows the distribution of the two Aedes mosquitos together with the countries that have been affected by the Zika virus disease. Furthermore it compares the size of the current outbreak with past outbreaks.
